Apply for a scrap metal licence

Before you start

A site licence lets you buy and sell scrap metal from a fixed location in the district.

A collectors licence lets you travel in the district to collect scrap metal. You cannot take metal back to a site in the district that you run to sell it.

You can only apply for one licence type from us, but you can have a site and a collectors licence from different councils. For example, you could apply to run a site in this district and also apply for a collectors licence in another district.

Each licence is valid for three years.

You will need:

  • Your contact details
  • If you're applying as a partnership; the contact details for every partner, director or shadow director and secretary
  • A copy of basic DBS checks dated within the last three months for everyone named on the form
  • Contact details for each site you want to run
  • Details of any scrap metal permits or registrations you hold
  • If you're renewing a licence, your HMRC tax check code
  • Your registered waste carrier number
  • Bank account details for each account used to pay suppliers
  • Details of any criminal convictions or enforcement action against anyone named on the form
